Chairman of the authority managing the Egyptian waterway said Tuesday, the Suez canal two-way section expansion is underway to increase it by 10 km, from 72 km to 82 km.
While giving an update on the expansion that started last year, Suez Canal Authority chairman Osama Rabie said that it would be too expensive to widen the entire length of the link between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.
According to Rabie, the work on the two-way section is meant to increase traffic safety, and that transit time to pass through the canal will remain at 11 hours.
Last year, global shipping was disrupted when one of the world’s largest container ships got stuck in the southern section of the canal for about a week.
