Explainer: Why Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus Was Absent Against Cape Verde

Why Ghana's Mohammed Kudus Was Absent from the Starting Lineup Against Cape Verde

Ghana’s aspirations for success in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have taken a hit, with star player Mohammed Kudus facing fitness uncertainties leading up to the team’s inaugural match against Cape Verde.

The West Ham midfielder, a linchpin in Ghana’s recent triumphs, has been contending with a hamstring injury, which kept him out of the game on Sunday.

Having scored 10 goals across all competitions this season, Mohammed Kudus was anticipated to be sidelined for Ghana’s opener against Cape Verde, having missed multiple days of training and sitting out Monday’s pre-tournament friendly against Namibia. His absence presents a significant setback for Ghana, given his outstanding form and indispensable role in the team.

Since his debut in late 2019, Mohammed Kudus has contributed nine goals and three assists for Ghana, solidifying his status as one of the team’s key players. His notable performances at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he scored two goals, further underscored his prowess on the grand stage.

Coach Chris Hughton was optimistic about Kudus’s recovery for the match. In his absence, other players failed to rise to the occasion, as the Black Stars lost to Cape Verde by two goals to one.

Despite this setback, Ghana maintains confidence in their tournament prospects, boasting a robust squad featuring other skilled players such as Inaki Williams and Jordan Ayew.

The 2023 AFCON, hosted in Ivory Coast, spans from January 13th to February 11th. Ghana finds themselves in Group B alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.
