The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has stated that the fire incident, which transpired early on Wednesday at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, has been successfully contained.
This announcement comes through an official statement issued by Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection in Abuja.
Yakubu-Funtua explained that at approximately 7:23 a.m. on the morning of the incident, a suspected electrical spark in the baggage hall ceiling triggered a smoke event reported at Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.
The source of the smoke was identified as a burning lithium inverter battery installation situated in the basement.
Responding promptly to the situation at 0730 hrs local time, the dedicated firefighters from the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, alongside the Electrical Department of FAAN, initiated immediate action.
Yakubu-Funtua emphasised that the rapid response and professional efforts effectively brought the situation under control.
As a precautionary measure, Yakubu-Funtua disclosed that the terminal building was swiftly evacuated due to smoke permeating some areas of the facility. This action aligns with their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers, staff, and all airport users.
He concluded by stating, “We are pleased to report that the situation is presently under control. FAAN is committed to its core values of safety, security, and comfort.”
