Eagle Square is the main square of Abuja, the capital of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In Abuja’s Central Business Area, it is situated between the Head of Service and the Federal Secretariat buildings. Due to the square’s eagle-like design, it is known as “Eagle Square.” It stands opposite the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. The square was built in 1999 to act as the focal point for Nigeria’s political institutions.
Ceremonies Hosted at Eagle Square
The Independence Day parade and the President of Nigeria’s inauguration both take place primarily on Eagle Square. After it was finished, it also played host to several political protests, religious events, musical performances, and award ceremonies. The Nigerian Army held the greatest presentation of colours in the Commonwealth on April 27, 2023, on Eagle Square, issuing 81 colours (53 new colours to already-existing formations and 28 new colours to newly-established units).
Presidential Inauguration
Eagle Square has yet again hosted the Presidential Inauguration of the 16th President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on May 29th, 2023.
Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu GCFR (born March 29, 1952) is a Nigerian politician who has served as the 16th and current president of Nigeria since 2023. He was governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007; and senator for Lagos West in the Third Republic.
Tinubu was born and raised in the southwest of Nigeria. After moving to the United States, he attended Chicago State University to study accounting. After moving back to Nigeria in the early 1990s, he worked as an accountant for Mobil Nigeria before entering politics in 1992 as the Social Democratic Party’s candidate for the Lagos West senate seat. Once the tyrannical Sani Abacha disbanded the Senate in 1993, Tinubu joined the National Democratic Coalition movement and started advocating for the restoration of democracy.
