Twelve college students lost their lives, and 21 sustained injuries in a collision between a truck and a bus in the southeastern state of Sao Paulo in Brazil, officials reported on Friday.
State Governor Tarcisio Freitas expressed his sorrow on X, saying, “We awake to the heartbreaking news of this tragedy that took the lives of 12 students in a horrific accident involving a bus and a truck.”
According to Sao Paulo civil defence authorities, a statement said that 21 injured individuals were transported to the hospital after the incident late Thursday, although most have since been discharged.
One injured person experienced “cranial trauma,” while three others were hospitalized and are currently in stable condition.

Freitas mentioned that the students were on their way home from the private University of Franca when the crash occurred.
“They saw their dreams cut short,” he said.
A statement from the state government indicated that the truck driver has been “charged with fleeing the scene, negligent homicide, and negligent bodily harm.”
In December 2024, a bus accident occurred in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, resulting in 41 fatalities, marking the deadliest incident on Brazil’s federal highways since 2007.
