Nigeria is Such a Patriarchal Society, Female Artists Work Ten Times Harder – Bolanle Olukanni

Following the release of Tiwa Savage’s third album which she put a lot of work into featuring A-list artistes like Davido, Sam Smith, Naira Marley, Stefflon dollar, she did not get the buzz that was necessary for the album.

It is no news that the last couple of weeks have been great for Nigerians as there were release of albums back to back. From Burnaboy to Fireboy to Adekunle Gold to Dj cuppy to mention a few. All of these albums have been well received and they have trended on the bird app, with support from a lot of their fans and celebrities as well.

However, it has not been the case for Tiwa Savage’s album, ”Celia”, which she named after her mummy. The Tv host took to her twitter to rant about this
”when all the male artists dropped albums- Na so so trend, trend number 1. Any small thing they do trend. Female musicians have to work 10 times more to get any type of notice in this country! it sucksssssss. Nigeria is such a patriarchal society”

This time around, Nigerians are not taking it easy on the Television host, saying she could blame Tiwa’s PR and not them.

“You’re blaming men instead of holding Tiwa and her team accountable. What was the PR Strategy for the release? Is the execution going as planned? Do they feel there is even a problem?

Burna went to hire Diddy, what do you think that was for? To teach him how to sing? Lol”

“how tf you gon say the reason Tiwa’s album isn’t trending is cus she’s a woman? cuppy’s album trended ffs. did you see the hype she put up before the album came out? barely nobody knew aunty wa was dropping an album. abeg next. edakun, miss me w this crap.”

Sis I love me a good man agenda but let us be honest here. Cuppy just dropped an album and it trended, we all saw it. Her and her team are doing the work. Tiwa’s has had the least PR of all the albums that have dropped recently. That’s not on Nigeria

A follower identified as @Erickmorre_ says ” This is just discrediting the amount of work male artist put in their work and to think both have the same platform to Trend. I can bet you listen more to male artist and if you do then you are part of the so-called Patriarchal Nigeria”

Bolanle still standing on her words, replied the follower by saying, ” you are a man until you have done one day as a woman, You CANNOT understand our burdens. If you choose to pretend like the system does not favour make musicians- then that’s your choice”

Another fan says

“Are you saying it’s just a media hype or the industry doesn’t support female artist as much as they do to their male counterparts? You’re subconsciously discrediting the male artists here. The trends has nothing to do with gender. Drop a good body of work and see it explode”

And again, Bolanle Olukanni insists on what she had said before,  making her point even clearer

“I am saying the system makes women work harder !!! Period. I am not going start calling name vs the amount of years people have put in over newer artists. And we cannot discredit how Good Tiwa is at her craft. The system is hard for women! That is what I am saying”
