Kenya had been subject to an indefinite ban by the international governing body, FIFA, due to meddling from the government, but this has now been lifted.

FIFA confirmed in a letter addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of the Football Kenya Federation, FKF, Barry Otieno that the ban has been lifted unconditionally.

The letter reads; “We would like to inform you that the situation of the FKF was submitted to the Bureau of FIFA Council for consideration and the decision on November 25”.

“In view of these circumstances, the Bureau of the Council decided on November 25 to lift the suspension of the FKF with immediate effect.

“Upon the lifting of the suspension, a Fifa-Caf mission team will be deployed to Nairobi in order to define the next steps for FKF and to also meet with the newly appointed Cabinet Secretary for Sports.”

When Amina Mohamed, the former Cabinet Secretary for Sports, commanded an audit of the FKF accounts in November of last year, Kenya was placed under sanctions.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa was detained and charged with misappropriating funds intended for the sport as a result of the action.

The ban prevented Kenya from competing in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and prevented the women’s team, the Harambee Starlets, from competing in the two-legged World Cup qualifiers against Uganda. As the new FKF Premier League season gets started, this will be fantastic news for clubs.
