FIFA president Gianni Infantino defended his organization’s decision to award the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia on Friday, despite criticism regarding the country’s human rights record and treatment of migrant workers.
The decision to grant the Gulf nation the World Cup was made at a FIFA Congress in December, sparking controversy due to concerns over same-sex relationships being criminalised in Saudi Arabia.
Infantino addressed these concerns in Belfast, stating that the FIFA Congress decision united the global football community.

Infantino was also asked about his relationship with US President Donald Trump.
Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, played a role in the FIFA Club World Cup draw in December, and Infantino attended Trump’s inauguration in January.
When questioned about his proximity to the controversial president, Infantino explained, “It is crucial for the success of a World Cup to have a close relationship with the president.”
Infantino also addressed the issue of Russia’s potential return to international football, saying that peace talks would play a critical role.
