The suspension of the Kenya and Zimbabwe football federations, following sanctions issued on February 24 have been ratified by the FIFA Congress.
The two federations were suspended over government interference in their activities. A total of 198 members voted in favour of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) suspension, with only one association voting against it.
In Zimbabwe’s case, 199 members voted in favour of the suspension of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), with two members voting against it.
The suspensions were imposed after Kenya in November replaced the FKF with a caretaker committee, while Zimbabwe’s Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) took control of ZIFA.
Both governments took the decisions following alleged mismanagement of the federations.
In both cases, FIFA rooted for internal investigations instead of government interventions.
The suspensions come ahead of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
While suspended, Kenya and Zimbabwe will not receive any funding from FIFA, and their football teams will not be allowed to play in any matches organised by FIFA or the Confederation of African Football.
