Modupe Ayandare, a 500-level student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, was discovered lifeless outside the university campus on Monday. Ayandare, who studied in the Department of Agronomy and served as the Agronomy Departmental President, was found hanging beside the church she attended off-campus.
The Public Relations Officer of the institution’s Students Union Government, Olaogbebikan Noble, confirmed the incident in a statement. He said, “We express in strong terms our dissatisfaction and agony concerning the death of one of our students, Ayandare Modupe. According to the report, the deceased was said to have committed suicide in the early hours of today, around 4 am, after finishing a vigil in her church. The incident happened beside the church she attended near Spotless Villa.”
The Students Union urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward, assuring that the law enforcement agencies are involved and a thorough investigation is underway. “Rest assured that justice will be served, and the law enforcement agency will do a thorough investigation,” the statement added.
Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, the state police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, stating that the police command is working to determine the cause.
In a related event in January 2023, Olona Oluwapelumi, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Technology Akure, committed suicide at his residence in the Aule Area of Akure, the Ondo State capital. Oluwapelumi, known as ‘Black’ and a student in the Department of Industrial Design, was found hanging in his room after friends broke down the door when he did not respond to calls.
