Finally, Nigeria is Assured of a 2020 Olympic Medal

After ten days of dramatic denials, shocking disappointments and embarrassing disqualifications, Nigeria has finally been guaranteed of a podium finish at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Blessing Oborududu, challenging for a wrestling medal in the 68kg women’s freestyle category defeated Mongolia’s Soronzoboldyn Battsege to book her place in the final.

In what can be termed as Oborududu’s final bow at the Olympics, she remarked she hopes to pick a gold medal which will be well celebrated in Nigeria, a country starved of a medal since the Olympics started.

In other sports, medal hopeful Tobiloba Amusan came short of a podium finish at the final of the 100m hurdles earlier on Monday, as she came fourth in her race. Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress also suffered their third loss at the Olympics and have crashed out of the games, like their male counterparts. Both Nigeria’s male and female basketball teams, Africa’s sole representatives failed to pick up a win at the Olympics despite giving good fights in all their games.

On Tuesday, Nigeria also expects to win a medal through long-jumper Ese Brume. The African and World Indoor Long Jump Champion qualified for the final after a leap of 6.76m.
