The Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Sanna Selin, has reaffirmed the country’s willingness to partner with Nigeria in the energy sector and other areas of mutual interest. Selin made this declaration on Friday while presenting her Letters of Credence to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
During the meeting, Selin praised President Tinubu for implementing critical economic and political reforms, emphasizing their importance for Nigeria’s development. “I salute you for all the ongoing reforms in the country. They are not easy. Even though it is painful, it is the only way Nigeria can progress. It is essential for the country,” she said.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude for Finland’s cooperation in addressing security concerns, particularly regarding the recent arrest of Simon Ekpa, a separatist leader. Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to unity and stability, stating, “Nigeria is indivisible. We have been through turbulent times, and we don’t want to promote terrorism.”
He acknowledged Finland’s efforts in upholding human rights and cooperation in Ekpa’s trial, noting, “The rule of law safeguards our democratic credentials, morals, and values. We must respect the rule of law.”
The Finnish ambassador also acknowledged the progress in bilateral relations, crediting the National Security Adviser for providing evidence to address security challenges posed by Ekpa.
Finland’s interest in Nigeria’s energy sector is not new. In 2022, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto highlighted Nigeria’s strategic importance in diversifying energy sources, particularly as Europe sought alternatives to Russian gas.
Finland has shown interest in Nigeria’s natural gas reserves and renewable energy initiatives, alongside exploring partnerships in education and economic diversification.
