Edoardo Bove, the Fiorentina midfielder who collapsed during Sunday’s Serie A match against Inter Milan, is now awake, alert, and recovering in hospital. Fiorentina confirmed the positive update on Monday, adding that further medical tests will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident.
Edoardo Bove, 21, was rushed to the intensive care unit at Florence’s Careggi hospital after his fall just 16 minutes into the game. Initial tests have ruled out severe damage to his central nervous and cardio-respiratory systems. According to the club, Bove has spoken with his family, teammates, and coaching staff.
Fiorentina general manager Alessandro Ferrari said: “He convinced them to play on Wednesday so we will, because we want to get back to regular life. Thanks to Edoardo we’ll try to do that.”
The incident evoked painful memories for Fiorentina fans, recalling the sudden death of former captain Davide Astori in 2018. Supporters remained at the Stadio Artemio Franchi long after the match was halted, hoping for positive news.
While Bove’s recovery is a relief, questions remain about his footballing future. Medical requirements in Italy are strict; Christian Eriksen faced similar challenges after a cardiac incident in 2021, ultimately leaving Serie A for the Premier League.
Serie A officials are deliberating when the interrupted match will be rescheduled, with reports suggesting it won’t take place until February.
