With a not-so-new man, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in charge, the Somalian government has restored broken ties with the Kenyan government.
Somalia on Friday announced that miraa exports from Kenya can now be brought into Somalia while scheduled flights to Mogadishu can now happen through the Kenyan Airways.
Mohamud and Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta met again in Nairobi having first met during the Somali’s President inauguration in June.
Both nations have claimed readiness to repair their fractured relationship and find new grounds for partnership.
“There is a lot to bring us together than to divide us,” President Mohamud said in a joint briefing with the Kenyan President.
The two East African leaders also agreed to open their land borders again, after its closure from each other ten years ago.
“The common challenges we have are not limited to terrorism or droughts. We have a lot more challenges, ” Mohamud further said.
Fish exports from Somalia to Kenya are also about to resume as both nations have agreed to trade across fronts and facilitate their economic prosperity.
Mohamud, who’s coming for the second time as President had masterminded a case against Kenya at the International Court of Justice in 2014.
The decision has largely gone in Somalia’s favour but both nations have now agreed they can feed off each other having opened diplomatic channels.
Courtesy visas to diplomatic passport holders will also resume soon and will be issued free on arrival.
