Five people drowned, and six others are still missing after the boat they were traveling in capsized on Monday while on their way from Zanzibar to Tanzania’s Tanga region. Local authorities said five bodies have been discovered in Mombasa, Kenya.
Pangani District Commissioner Musa Kilakala confirmed the tragic incident and said police have started investigating the incident.
“Our security forces are collaborating with their counterparts in Kenya to gather information. We will provide updates in due course,” Kilakala told journalists.
The marine vessel, which was carrying traders and businessmen, was caught in a storm and lost in the deluge.
“We are actively working to locate the missing passengers along the Tanzania-Kenya border,” Kilakala added.
It is another tragic incident that the country has had to grapple with after being besieged by heavy rains, causing severe floods that have wreaked havoc across the country. With the death toll over 150, the country is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
The rains have crushed communities and left dilapidated infrastructure in their wake, causing destruction and despair.
A cyclone has battered Tanzania’s coast to exacerbate the ongoing crisis, wreaking havoc on unprepared communities, destroying buildings, and shattering lives.
