Five persons were killed and at least 25 others were injured as grenade explodes in Um Dafug, South Darfur of Sudan, in an apparent attack on a social event, according to Police Authorities.
The event occurred in the southeast of Um Dafug community, close to Sudan’s border with the Central African Republic, according to Maj Gen Mohamed El Zein, Director of South Darfur State Police.
Gen El Zein said that “a person threw a grenade among members of the public, who were attending a social event”. He confirmed that five people were killed immediately while 25 were wounded.
The injured victims have been evacuated to Nyala Teaching Hospital in the South Darfur capital.
Residents of Darfur allege that the widespread use of guns by members of the public has boosted the prevalence of crimes, particularly armed robbery, and exacerbated tribal disputes.
