Five Iconic female African DJ’s

You know the saying, “What a man can do, a Woman can do better?” It’s definitely becoming a reality in the world of disc jockeying as these women have ventured into a field which is popularly known to be for guys and are giving the men a run. Meet these great women.



DJ Zinhle


Ntombezinhle Jiyane is a South African DJ, producer, media personality, and business woman, who is better known by her stage name DJ Zinhle. DJ Zinhle started her career around 2004. Initially, she wanted to be a TV presenter and never had any aspirations of being a DJ, until her brother’s passion for mixing vinyl’s rubbed off on her and her love and passion for being a DJ grew. She got her first break as a resident DJ on a youth dance show called Jika Majika that aired on SABC 1.


She worked with South African music icon Boom Shaka on the album I Put It In, which featured other notable artists like Dr Malinga, Khanyi Mbau, Mphoza, and many more. She headlined the Sisters with Soul concert along with Amanda Black. Zinhle also headlined the Zimfest 2019 live concert held in Zimbabwe. Her 2019 hit song “Umlilo” gained 5.1 million streams in just three months, and reached Multi-platinum status in South Africa and it was also voted as 2019’s Song of The Year. DJ Zinhle was chosen as the headline act for the inaugural Red Bull Music Experience in Cape Town.

DJ Cuppy


Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola professionally known as Cuppy, is a Nigerian disc jockey and producer. She is the daughter of billionaire Nigerian businessman Femi Otedola. She grew up in Lagos and moved to London at the age of 13. Cuppy described her sound as “Neo-Afrobeats”, which is a fusion of Electro house and Afrobeats. In January 2015, Cuppy was featured on the cover of the Guardian Life magazine. The cover celebrated a new generation of African women. In March 2015, Cuppy was named the official DJ for the 2015 Oil Barons Charity in Dubai, and became the first African act to perform at the event. She was featured in the 2015 April/May issue of Forbes Woman Africa. In 2020, Cuppy was inducted into the Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30 class. On May 28, 2020, she became the host of ‘Africa Now Radio’ on Apple Music Beats 1.

DJ Nyce


DJ Nyce is a graduate of Methodist University, Ghana. She is a music engineer and audience manager. Nyce has won for her self several awards and nominees such as; Ghana-AFRIMMA NOMINEE 2017, and Best Dj Africa.
A fast rising DJ in Ghana, she managed to beat reputable names to scoop the Female DJ of the Year award at the 2015 Ghana DJ Awards, adding to her major accomplishments. The dark-skinned beauty with flawless skills on the turntables is one of the common attractions in one of Ghana’s top clubs – Paparellis Pub.

DJ Switch


Obianuju Catherine Udeh, professionally known as DJ Switch, is a Nigerian DJ, songwriter and musician who emerged as the winner of the first edition of The Glo X Factor in 2013 at the age of 29. She is the last of eight children, from Udi in Enugu State, a Geology graduate from University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State and now a professional DJ.


DJ Switch first earned attention when her group, Da Pulse, emerged as the winner of the 2009 edition of reality music competition, Star Quest. They further went on to release a hit song titled, So Tey, and featured American rapper, Busta Rhymes in the remix. Her career fully kicked off after she emerged the winner of the maiden and only edition of the Glo X-Factor in 2013. She was signed into a record deal with Sony Music as part of the prizes for the emergence, as the winner of the glo X factor been endorsed by Peter Okoye’s P-Classic Records. She recently hosted one of the Bbnaija 2020 lockdown season Saturday house parties which is considered one of the most fun parties for the season.

DJ Roxxi


Deshnie Govender better known as DJ Roxxi, is a South African DJ, who is one of few Indian female club DJs in South Africa. Heralded as the first and only Indian female club DJ in South Africa, Roxxi was soon asked to appear at many events and shows. In 2007, Roxxi was selected as the only female DJ on board the AXE Jet Experience to Ibiza with top SA celebrities. This gave Roxxi the opportunity to travel to Ibiza and perform with top South African 5FM DJ’s.
Its safe to say the woman are heading towards been better than the men if not already.
