Four male adults and a housewife have drowned in an attempt to flee from bandits attempting to abduct them at Abaji area council of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The bandits attacked Chakumi village in Gurdi ward of Abaji area council of Abuja. Village chief of Chakumi, Mohammed Magaji, confirmed the incident saying it happened around 11am on Wednesday.

He said the deceased victims, including a middle-aged woman were working on the farm, when they saw the approaching assailants.

The area shares a boundary with neighbouring Daku village through river Gurara in Dobi ward of Gwagwalada area council.

Magaji said they rushed to board a boat in order to escape to neighbouring Daku village, but the boat overturned in the process of trying to cross the river Gurara.

“And even as I am talking to you right now, the corpses of the victims have not been recovered yet as fishermen from Daku and my village are still searching for the corpses,” he said.

Magaji decried the activities of armed assailants in the area. He added that farmers could no longer go to their farms due to fear of being kidnapped by bandits.

No statement has been issued by the spokesperson of the FCT police command, DSP Adeh Josephine at the time of filing this report.
