Social media users in Ghana are returning to the streets of Ghana today, under the hashtag #FixTheCountry to pressure the government for social and economic reforms.
The protests which started online in May 2021 following public water crisis as well an increase in fuel prices gained more traction when call and data charges were increased due to a corresponding increase in the National Health Insurance Levy by the government.
The group had earlier tried, without success to embark on peaceful demonstrations on the streets. The Police however secured an injunction against the move.
After several failed attempts to stage the protest, the youths gathered this morning at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to join in the ‘Fix the country’ demonstrations.
Today’s protest in Ghana coincides with the Founders’ Day celebration. It is a national public holiday observed in Ghana annually to commemorate the contributions of all the people, particularly the ‘Big Six’ who led the struggle for country’s independence.
