A severe flood has devastated the Argungu Emirate in Kebbi State, destroying over 200 houses and displacing numerous residents.
The disaster followed heavy rainfall on Saturday and Sunday morning, impacting villages in Bayawa, Tiggi, Fakon Sarki Settlement, and the Karda Area in Argungu town.
The flooding has left many homeless, with some finding temporary refuge in local schools. Residents of Bayawa village are currently staying at Bayawa Secondary School, while those from Fakon Sarki have been relocated to Magajin Rafi Model Primary School in Argungu town’s new barracks area. Additionally, residents of Tiggi village have taken shelter in the local secondary school.
Kebbi State Deputy Governor Umar Tafida visited the affected areas to assess the damage and provide support. He ordered an immediate evaluation of the damaged houses and instructed the compilation of a list of victims and their losses.
The deputy governor also directed the evacuation of affected residents to nearby schools for safety and the provision of emergency assistance. He provided N5 million to each affected village—Bayawa, Tiggi, and Fakon Sarki—as initial aid, along with an additional one million naira for food and drinks for the displaced residents.
Tafida assured the victims that he would report the incident to the state governor, Nasir Idris, to seek further assistance from the state and federal governments.
