City Power Johannesburg is now managing a large number of outages that have been reported in response to the flooding that occurred in several areas of the city on Wednesday night.
There have been over 5,000 requests, the majority of which have been about power disruptions brought on by intense rains.
Among the most severely affected places, according to the utility, are the Hursthill and Randburg Service Delivery Centres.
But City Power crews are on the ground looking into what’s causing these outages.

“We would like to let our customers know that responding to outages promptly is made more difficult by localised flooding. The majority of the roads are closed because of the rain, as you can imagine. Most are flooded as well, and also, trees have been uprooted, and bridges have been washed away, especially in areas such as Randburg and Fourways, where we are having issues. Some of our cables have been exposed due to soil erosions,” says City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
Power outages in Tshwane
The City of Tshwane claims that they are making every effort to address the continuous power outages in a number of locations, such as Soshanguve, Pienaarspoort, and the Pretoria central business district. In order to limit disruptions, restoration operations will be stepped up.
According to the city, extensive infrastructure failures and power outages across the majority of the city are the result of cable faults brought on by the severe rainfall.
“We fully acknowledge that many residents and businesses remain without electricity, and we remain committed to resolving these outages as quickly as possible,” explains Zintle Mahlati, spokesperson for Tshwane Mayor.
“We value our people’s and businesses’ understanding and patience during this trying period. We are concentrating on long-term solutions to improve the resilience and dependability of the city’s power system and avoid further disruptions, even though quick restoration is still our top priority.”
