Focus: Improving Access to Quality Public Education in Africa

Today is International Day of Education, a day designated by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate the role of education in peace and development. Education is a fundamental human right and a public responsibility.

However, sub-Saharan Africa has some of the highest rates of education exclusion in the world. Over one-fifth of children between the ages of 6 and 11 are out of school, followed by one-third of youth between the ages of 12 and 14, and nearly 60% of youth between the ages of 15 and 17 are also not enrolled.

Without urgent action, the situation will likely get worse as the region faces a rising demand for education due to a still-growing school-age population.

On this episode of One Slot, Professor Michael le Cordeur, a researcher who chairs the Department of Curriculum Studies in the Faculty of Education at Stellenbosch University joins us to discuss ways to improve access to quality public education in Africa. Watch:
