Former Aston Villa striker Gary Shaw has tragically passed away at the age of 63 after sustaining injuries in a fall.
Shaw played a pivotal role in Aston Villa’s triumphs, helping secure the league title in 1981 and lifting the European Cup in 1982.
A graduate of the club’s youth academy, Shaw netted 79 goals in 213 appearances for his beloved Villa.
“Aston Villa Football Club is deeply shocked and profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of Gary Shaw, one of our European Cup-winning legends,” the club announced on Monday.
“Gary was truly one of our own, a gifted striker who brought joy to the supporters with his goal-scoring heroics, driving Villa to success in the 1980s. His individual brilliance earned him accolades, and he became a fan favorite on the terraces.
“He passed away peacefully earlier today, surrounded by his family, who have requested Aston Villa release a statement on their behalf.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to Gary’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
In recognition of his talent, Shaw was named the Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year in 1981 and the European Young Player of the Year in 1982.
Beyond his remarkable career at Aston Villa, Shaw also played for Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock, and Shrewsbury Town, representing England at the Under-21 level.
After retiring from football in 1992, Shaw worked as a statistical analyst and served as a club ambassador for Villa Park.
