Former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah is set to take the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to court over unpaid salaries during his time as the national team’s coach.
The former Al Khartoum boss’ decision comes after the country’s football body failed to pay him the five months wages he is owed.
Appiah is said to have written a letter of reminder to the FA after previously writing to them through his lawyer demanding his unpaid wages.
He had a three-year reign as Black Stars coach (2017-2019), his second stint as coach of the senior national team.
Appiah’s contract was not renewed in December 2019 when the Kurt Okraku led administration took charge from the FIFA/CAF Normalisation committee.
In an interview with a radio station in Ghana (Starr FM), Appiah expressed his displeasure and is ready for a legal battle with the Football Association.
“I decided to keep quiet on my salary issues all this while but I think if you are working with someone and you are no more, the best way is to give the person whatever he deserves and there will be peace,” Appiah said.
“The question is ‘how do I feed my family? Meanwhile, I quite remember when they [GFA] took over [last October], [Normalisation Committee head] Dr. Kofi Amoah gave them $1,000,000 [€924,573.3] and I even understand there is also some $500,000 [462,286.6] from Fifa or whatever.
“The bottom line is you should look at the essential ones and try and sort it out. But it looks like they don’t care.
“This is money I have worked for and they are not telling me anything which I feel it doesn’t show a sign of respect. So, I have told my lawyers to deal with it.”
In his first stint, Appiah coached the Black Stars to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In his second, he led Ghana to a disappointing Round of 16 finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, the first time since 2006 the Black Stars failed to reach the quarter-final of the tournament.
