Former WBC heavyweight boxing champion, Deontay Wilder has traced his roots to Edo, famous and historic state in Southern Nigeria.
Wilder in a viral video on YouTube revealed his ancestry and said he’s going to visit Edo State to learn more about the culture.
From his words, he seems to have dug up some information about the state and the people as he tagged them warriors who fought a lot.
Wilder said he wants to go back and learn more about his culture and information with things about him.
“Once I’m done with what I’m doing, I’m going back to see my tribe, Edo, ” he said. When asked by the interviewer if he meant Edo State in Nigeria, he answered in agreement and described what they are about.
“I want to see my culture and my ancestors and learn a lot of things. We all have lots of things that we are connected to that we know nothing about. I’ll love to go there and do research about my roots and my tribe,” he added.

Wilder, known for his high-octave boxing held the WBC heavyweight belt for 5 years between 2015 and 2020 and had ten successful defences. It’s not the first time he has openly spoken about his links with Nigeria with many fans already mouthing a potential clash with another foreign-born Nigerian heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua.
Joshua’s parents hail from Ogun State, and he has recently visited the state and his father’s hometown, Sagamu.
Both boxers have trash-talked on many occasions with nothing concrete happening ever since. They came close to having a duel in 2020 but Joshua’s camp accused Wilder of trying to run from a clash with the current champion of the world.
Wilder’s belt was stripped off him when he was defeated by British boxer, Tyson Fury in 2020, marking an end to his successful title defences.
