Chris Hughton, the former manager of Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United, has apparently applied for the vacant Black Stars job. The Irishman, who was a member of Ghana’s technical team during the World Cup in Qatar, has reportedly expressed interest in the role of national team head coach.
According to Ghanaian media, the experienced manager sent his application last week as the country’s FA seeks to find a new coach this month. The Black Stars have been without a coach since Otto Addo stepped down following Ghana’s early departure from the 2022 World Cup. Hughton worked with Addo as a technical advisor.
The Ghana Football Association has revealed that it has received over 60 applications for the open position. “The Black Stars is one of the most attractive brands on the continent. Every single day you open the GFA email, you will see someone has applied for the Black Stars coaching job,” claimed the FA’s Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum.
“It is an attractive brand, no doubt about that. Even the very day coach Otto Addo confirmed he was leaving, we had coaches expressing interest in the job.”
Chris Hughton originally joined the Black Stars in March 2022 for the World Cup play-off against Nigeria, before taking part in the team’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifications in June of last year.
The former Nottingham Forest boss also traveled to Japan with the team for the Kirin Cup tournament before rejoining the squad in Qatar for the World Cup.
