Saviour Kasukuwere, a former cabinet member who was exiled, has been prohibited from running for president of the country. This was aby the Zimbabwean High Court. This decision comes in response to a complaint lodged by a member of the ruling party against the former Zanu PF political commissar.
Lovedale Mangwana, an activist from the ruling party, approached the High Court to challenge Kasukuwere’s nomination for the presidency in the upcoming August 23 elections. Mangwana argued that the Nomination Court violated the Constitution by accepting Kasukuwere’s nomination papers.
Mangwana claims that despite Kasukuwere being away from his own constituency for more than 18 months, the Nomination Court approved his candidacy. Through his attorneys, Kasukuwere contested the allegations, stating that there was insufficient evidence to prove he was abroad during the mentioned time frame. Kasukuwere explained that his temporary absence from the country was due to medical reasons.
Kasukuwere’s camp views the court’s decision against him as an attempt by the ruling Zanu-PF to sideline him from the race.
