Former Kenyan President Kenyatta Ousted as Jubilee Party Leader

Former Kenyan President Kenyatta Ousted as Jubilee Party Leader in Escalating Wrangles

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has been ousted as Jubilee party leader amidst escalating internal conflicts in the former ruling party. According to the Kanini Kega-led faction of the party, former Murang’a Woman Rep Sabina Chege has been appointed as the new party leader on an acting capacity following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on April 2.

The party has been plagued by leadership wrangles, after Kanini Kega and Jeremiah Kioni clashed over who should occupy the Secretary-General position. The Political Parties Tribunal declined to quash the NEC’s resolution that installed Kanini Kega as Kioni’s replacement, which further fuelled the internal divisions.

In a judgement delivered on April 16, the tribunal ruled that the notice for the NEC meeting issued on February 2 and the subsequent NEC meeting on February 10, which imposed Kega, were conducted in accordance with the party Constitution. The decision has sparked mixed reactions among party supporters, and it remains to be seen how the party will move forward amidst the ongoing conflicts.
