During an Exclusive interview on News Central, Khama said he’s going back because he is concerned about the situation in Botswana. He further reiterated that he would ensure President Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi and the ruling Botswana Democratic Party are kicked out of power in the forthcoming polls.

“I will rather do it at home, going around, addressing the people of Botswana…Bringing it to their attention. They need it because they’re the ones suffering under the current administration. I just want to be there, in the lead up to the election to achieve that ”

Khama has been resident in South Africa since November 2021. He fled Botswana after his home was invaded following allegations that he had illegally obtained firearms. Khama has denied the allegations.

Months ago, Khama alleged that his successor, Masisi, was deploying law enforcement agents to persecute his political opponents.

While Khama has also previously accused Masisi’s administration of a plans to have him eliminated, the government of Botswana has dismissed these claims saying they were false.

Masisi is the fifth and current President of Botswana, serving since 2018. He was the 8th Vice President of the country, from 12 November 2014 to 1 April 2018.
