According to local media, Esther Lungu, a former first lady of Zambia, was questioned on Tuesday regarding ownership claims of ultramodern housing units in the city of Lusaka.
The Drug Enforcement Commission confiscated 15 apartments close to the state lodge earlier this month on the grounds that they may have been used as criminal profits.
After Mrs. Lungu claimed to be the owner of the apartments, the anti-money laundering agency called her in. Her spouse, former president Edgar Lungu, was with her.
In an anti-corruption effort started by President Hakainde Hichilema, Zambian investigative agencies have been keeping an eye on the former first family.
The president, who took office in August of last year, has vowed to recoup any resources that were allegedly stolen by the Lungu regime.
She held the position of the First Lady of Zambia from January 25, 2015 to August 24, 2021.
In 2015, Lungu traveled to the United States for a series of First Ladies’ and women’s summits and meetings at the George W. Bush Institute in Dallas, Texas, and the United Nations in New York City.
She was a panelist at Invest in Women in Dallas, which was moderated by Cherie Blair. She campaigned against child marriage during her tenure as First Lady. She is the chairman of and a mentor from the Esther Lungu Foundation, formed in December 2015 with the goal of empowering women and children in Zambia.
