A mass shooting late Saturday night in Birmingham, Alabama, has left four people dead and dozens wounded, local police confirmed. Multiple assailants opened fire on a group in the Five Points South district just after 11:00 p.m., according to Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Police found three victims—two adult males and one adult female—unresponsive at the scene. All had suffered gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead on the sidewalk. A fourth victim later died in a hospital.
Dozens more were injured, with at least four suffering life-threatening injuries, Fitzgerald said. The remaining victims sustained various injuries.
Authorities are still searching for the suspects, and no arrests have been made. Police have urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist the investigation. Several agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, are working on the case.
Emergency services responded to the scene late Saturday and cordoned off the area for the ongoing investigation.
The shooting adds to a grim tally of at least 403 mass shootings across the U.S. so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA). The GVA defines mass shootings as incidents involving at least four victims, whether killed or wounded. This year, over 12,400 people have lost their lives to gun violence across the country, GVA reports.
