Owolabi Olakulehin, who is slated to become Ibadan’s Olubadan, is a multifaceted individual who is mostly unknown to the general public.
This transition follows the passing of the 42nd Olubadan, Ọba Lekan Balogun, who was from the same Ibadan North East local government as him.
He is from the Okugbaja family in the Ita Baale area.
He is an ex-serviceman, having served in the Nigerian army.
He ran for and won the Federal House of Representatives election in 1992 as a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the Third Republic.
He’s also a devout Christian.
With the passing of Oba Balogun, the spotlight now turns to the next in line to ascend the throne, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. Hailing from the Okugbaja family in the Ita Baale area of Ibadan North East Local Government, Olakulehin is set to become the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, pending approval from Governor Seyi Makinde.
Olakulehin brings a wealth of experience and a diverse background to the revered position. At 84 years old, he would be one of the oldest monarchs to assume the Olubadan post if ratified by authorities. However, his advanced age is complemented by a distinguished career that includes serving as a member of the House of Representatives during Nigeria’s Third Republic under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1992.
Furthermore, Olakulehin has a military background, having served in the esteemed Nigerian Army, one of the most respected security institutions in West Africa. This experience likely prepared him for the responsibilities that come with the title of Balogun, a Yoruba word that translates to “warlord” or “meet at war,” reflecting the traditional military role associated with the position he currently holds.
The Demise of Oba Lekan Balogun
News of Oba Balogun’s demise was confirmed by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sulaimon Olanrewaju. Born on October 18, 1942, the late monarch had a reign that spanned two years, with his burial, according to Islamic rites, scheduled for Friday at 4 pm.
Oba Balogun’s passing occurred just two days after he celebrated his second anniversary on the throne, coinciding with the beginning of this year’s Ramadan fast. In a statement released by his Personal Assistant on media, Oladele Ogunsola, the Olubadan marked this milestone in Ibadan, the state capital, calling for prayers for the country from Islamic faithful and emphasising the importance of expressing love for one another to ensure a stress-free period for adherents.
As Ibadanland prepares to welcome its new traditional ruler, the people of the ancient city await the state governor’s approval, marking the beginning of a new era for the Olubadan stool and the rich cultural heritage it represents.
