The death toll from a tragic road accident involving 2024 Batch C Stream 2 corps members, who were on their way to the Orientation Camp in Afikpo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, has risen to four.
The accident occurred around 2:00 pm on Wednesday along the Okposi-Amasiri Road, when an Enugu North Mass Transit bus collided with a stationary truck in the Okposi area of Ohaozara Local Government Area.
The collision resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries among the passengers. A statement from David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, Uburu, confirmed on Thursday that four individuals had died.
Thirteen others were rushed to the hospital, with two sadly passing away upon arrival.
Among the survivors, two have been transferred to the surgical ward for further treatment, while the others remain under care in the accident and emergency ward.
Hospital officials report that the survivors are showing signs of recovery, with hopes for a full recovery.
Remarkably, one corps member emerged from the accident without injuries. However, the bus driver sustained serious cervical injuries and is receiving ongoing medical care.
This tragic incident has prompted renewed calls for better road safety measures and heightened vigilance from both drivers and authorities to prevent similar accidents in the future.
