Four people have been killed and several wounded in a shooting near a mosque in Oman’s capital Muscat, the Omani police said on Tuesday.
The police say they have taken charge of the situation in Wadi al-Kabir, a rare breach of security in one of the most stable nations in the Middle East.
“All security measures and procedures have been taken to deal with the situation, and procedures for gathering evidence and investigation are being completed,” the police said.
The U.S. embassy issued a brief statement, urging its citizens to remain cautious.
“U.S. citizens should remain vigilant, monitor local news and heed directions of local authorities,” it said in a statement.
Footage verified by AFP shows people fleeing near Imam Ali Mosque, as gunshots ring out. Oman maintains neutrality in the turbulent region and has mediated in disputes including between the United States and Iran.
