Four children likely to be citizens of Nigeria were killed when a fire broke out in a multiplex residential building in Ansan, a city in the Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.

Authorities said the fire started at 3:28 a.m local time on Monday on the second floor of the three-story building and was put out more than 40 minutes later.

Four siblings from Nigeria, ranging in age from four to eleven, were discovered dead inside their duplex unit at Ansan. Although their parents left the building with their two-year-old, it is assumed that they were unable to get all of their children out.

A total of 37 people reportedly succeeded in leaving, while 11 others had to be brought to hospitals for smoke inhalation.

Other residents of the building, mostly foreigners, also evacuated, including three other Nigerian nationals, two Uzbeks and a Russian national.

According to the Police, an electrical problem is suspected to be the cause of the fire.
