Four people, including a pregnant woman, were killed after a vehicle in the convoy carrying the body of the late Malawi Vice-President Saulos Chilima veered off and ran into mourners.
The convoy, which was being escorted by police and military officers was travelling from the capital, Lilongwe, to the late vice president’s hometown in Ntcheu for burial.
Police say twelve other people were injured in the incident on Sunday night and were receiving treatment.
Thousands of people had lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the coffin and reports say as the convoy approached Mr Chilima’s home, some people began to throw stones at government vehicles and officials.
According to the police, a vehicle went off the road in the ensuing commotion hitting a group of mourners, killing four of them.
Mr Chilima, 51, died last Monday along with nine others when a military aircraft carrying the government delegation to the burial of a government minister crashed in a forest in the north of the country.
On Sunday, thousands of Malawians went to a funeral service at the national stadium to pay tribute to a man who the people well loved.
Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera has promised a full investigation into the cause of the crash.
