Next year’s G7 summit will be held in Evian, the renowned French spa town famous for its mineral water, President Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday.
Macron revealed the location in a video posted on social media while attending this year’s G7 meeting at Kananaskis, a resort in the Canadian Rockies. Speaking to journalists afterwards, he praised Evian and its surrounding area for demonstrating “a real willingness and real commitment” to host such a significant global event.
Situated in the Alps near the Swiss border, Evian-les-Bains has enjoyed international fame since the 19th century, initially due to its natural spring water. Over the years, it has grown into a luxurious retreat, attracting royalty and celebrities alike.
This will not be the first time Evian plays a role on the world stage. In 1962, the town hosted the signing of the Evian Accords, which brought an end to the Algerian War and paved the way for Algeria’s independence from France.
The G7 summit rotates annually among its member nations—Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States—all of which are leading industrial democracies. France last hosted the G7 in 2019 in the coastal town of Biarritz.
Looking further ahead, the United States is scheduled to host the 2027 summit, providing President Donald Trump the chance to stage a major international gathering at a venue of his choosing.
This year’s summit focused on issues including trade tensions linked to Trump and ongoing support for Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelensky attending as a guest. However, proceedings were heavily overshadowed by Israel’s ongoing unprovoked military attack against Iran.
