The two Frenchmen convicted in Madagascar for a plot to stage a coup and assassinate the Malagasy President Andry Rajoelina in July last year, rejected their conviction on Friday.

The two defendants – Franco-Malagasy Paul Rafanoharana and Frenchman Philippe François, denounced the irregularities that marred the legal process holding in the country’s capital Antananarivo.

The defence wants the sentence by the Ordinary Criminal Court last December to be upturned without a postponement of the trial, which would lead to the acquittal of the detainees.

Last year, Rafanoharana and François, were sentenced to 20 and 10 years of hard labour.

The Appeal Court’s decision will be heard on August 26, 2022.
