Luis Boa Morte, the current first-team coach at Fulham, will depart from his role at the end of the season to assume the position of head coach for Guinea-Bissau.
The 46-year-old Portuguese joined Fulham in 2021, accompanying Marco Silva’s appointment as the club’s head coach. Boa Morte and Silva have a history of collaboration, having worked together previously at Sporting Lisbon and Everton. Boa Morte also boasts a significant playing career at Fulham, featuring in over 150 matches between 2001 and 2007.
Fulham expressed gratitude for Boa Morte’s contributions and extended his best wishes for his future endeavours in Guinea-Bissau, effective after the season’s conclusion.
Boa Morte’s new role marks his debut coaching position in international football, overseeing a team ranked 118th globally. Guinea-Bissau, known as the African Wild Dogs, has yet to qualify for the World Cup and has not advanced beyond the group stage in the Africa Cup of Nations across four previous attempts.
Despite recent struggles at the Nations Cup in Ivory Coast, where they finished at the bottom of Group A after losing all three matches, Boa Morte aims to uplift Guinea-Bissau’s footballing prospects.
Before his coaching career, Boa Morte managed Portuguese fourth-tier side Sintrense from 2017 to 2018. As a player, he enjoyed success, winning the Premier League title with Arsenal in 1998, featuring for clubs like West Ham and Southampton, and experiencing stints in Greece and South Africa.
Boa Morte also represented Portugal on the international stage, making 28 appearances and scoring one goal during his career.
