The Federal University of Oye, Ekiti state, has refuted reports suggesting that Atanda Modupe Deborah, a student of the Faculty of Basic Medical Science, suffered mutilation at the hands of unidentified individuals.

The 100-level student disappeared after she went to study in her class on the night of Monday, September 4, 2023. Following days of extensive search efforts, her body was discovered buried in a shallow grave behind her faculty on Wednesday, September 6. Unconfirmed accounts had alleged that those responsible for her demise had plucked out her eyes.

Nevertheless, in an official statement released, the school authorities have declared that they visited the mortuary where her body had been placed and can confirm that no part of her body underwent mutilation.

A section of the statement reads:

“The cause of death and the circumstances surrounding her passing are deeply distressing for the entire student community of FUOYE. As we bid farewell to a cherished and promising student like MODUPE, representatives of the FUOYE STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT (FUOYESUG) visited the morgue. We were able to verify to everyone that her body remained intact, contrary to the claims and rumours circulating. We can confirm that at least twelve (12) individuals have been apprehended in connection with this crime, and we will not cease our efforts until the culprits are brought to justice.”
