Gabonese police arrested 348 people overnight for curfew violations and alleged robberies, as tensions simmer under the military junta that seized power in August 2023. The strict overnight curfew, initially imposed by the ousted Bongo regime, remains in place, with authorities citing security concerns.
Images circulating on social media show detainees claiming their heads were shaved by police, sparking outrage. Activist group COPIL Citizen condemned these “unacceptable acts” and called for an independent investigation.
The curfew was tightened ahead of a November referendum that approved a new constitution, which strengthens presidential powers while banning dynastic successions. Despite promises of a return to civilian rule, junta leader General Brice Oligui Nguema has signaled his intent to contest the 2025 presidential election.
