Gabon’s Aubameyang signs new deal with Arsenal

Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has signed a new three-year deal with Arsenal, keeping him at the club until 2023.

Aubameyang joined Arsenal in January 2018, for a then record fee of £56m, and has so far scored 72 goals in 111 appearances for the North London side.

The 31-year-old who is also the club’s captain, scored 22 goals in all competitions for last season, including both goals for the Gunners in the FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley which they won 2-1.

And, in the Community Shield win against Liverpool at the same venue, he found the back of the net from open play and scored the winning penalty for Arsenal.

“Signing for this special club was never in doubt,” Auba told the club’s website.

“It’s thanks to our fans, my team-mates, my family and everybody at this club that I feel like I belong here.

“I believe in Arsenal. We can achieve big things together. We have something exciting here and I believe the best is to come for Arsenal.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said “It was important for Pierre-Emerick to stay with us.”

“He’s a superb player with an incredible mentality. Being the player to have taken the least amount of time to reach 50 goals with this club tells you everything you need to know about him and his way of working.”

“He’s an important leader for the team and a big part of what we’re building. He wants to be up there with the best players in the world and leave his mark. He can achieve that here.”

Arsenal began their new season campaign with a 3-0 win at newly promoted Fulham on Saturday to top the Premier League table, and Aubameyang was amongst the scorers.

They will welcome West Ham to the Emirates Stadium for their second league game of the season, on Saturday 19 September.
