Gambian Parliament to Debate Cough Syrup Scandal

Gambian Parliament to Debate Deaths Caused by Cough Syrups (News Central TV)

The Gambian parliament will meet in an emergency session to discuss the deaths of over 70 children that have been linked to Indian-made cough syrups.

The kids were found to have severe kidney issues. The country’s MPs will convene in parliament for the first time on Wednesday since the tragedy earlier this month.

According to Gambian health officials, there are 82 active cases and 12 recoveries, but no new cases have been reported. The majority of the current instances involve infants and toddlers.

Pressure from the nation’s civil society organisations is increasing on the authorities to take legal action against individuals who are importing the medicines.

The Red Cross and health authorities have begun a second round of recalling the cough medicines.

The Medicine Control Agency was founded without a laboratory to check the efficacy of the drugs, according to police investigations. A panel of inquiry has been established by President Adama Barrow to look into the fatalities.
