Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, has stated that the revoked land in the Federal Capital Territory is not “personally” owned.
Buhari’s name appeared in a report released on Thursday that revealed Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike‘s determination to cancel the land titles of some high-profile individuals.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday, Shehu stated that the aforementioned land has been assigned to the “Muhammadu Buhari Foundation.”
According to him, “The Foundation was itself floated by some utilitarian individuals around him who, it must be said, went about it legally with the support of several well-meaning people.”
“But they ran into a bottleneck in the FCDA’s land department, which sent them an exorbitant fee for the issuance of the certificate of occupancy, which was far more than the invoices granted to similar organisations. It’s possible that this was not an error, but rather a planned mistake, making the revocation of the land no surprise to anyone.”
Shehu stated that the former President owns a block of land in Abuja.
“When he and his cabinet members were invited to fill up forms and purchase land during his stay in government, he returned the form blank, claiming that he already owned a plot of land in the FCT and that those who did not should be given one. He, therefore, declined the offer.
“So please let all those jumping up and down in the digital space talking about the rightfulness or the lack of it on the reported seizure of Buhari’s land in Abuja get their facts right, and stop dragging down the name of the former President,” he said.
