The All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU) has called for improved campus security across universities and institutions of learning in Africa. This call was made by the President of AASU, Osisiogu Osikenyi E., in Abuja, Nigeria, during the memorial of the 8th anniversary of Kenya’s Garissa University College massacre.
The Garissa massacre, which is now the second deadliest terrorist attack in Kenya’s history, claimed the lives of 148 people, mostly students, and injured 79 others. Over 700 students were left terrified during the attack, which is still fresh in the minds of many.
During the commemoration, the AASU remembered the victims of campus insecurity across Africa, including Kenya, Somalia, Nigeria, and other countries on the continent. The students’ union demanded enhanced campus security measures to ensure the safety of students and staff in institutions of learning.
The AASU expressed its sympathy to the families and loved ones of the victims and called on African governments to prioritise campus security to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
