The star of “Emilia Pérez,” Karla Sofía Gascón, had to take a moment out of her celebration of creating Oscar history to apologise.
In an interview with CNN, Gascón stated, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt.
“Being a member of a marginalised community, I am acutely aware of this suffering, and I sincerely apologise to anyone I have hurt.” I’ve battled for a better world my entire life. In my opinion, light will always prevail over darkness.”
Gascón is the first openly transgender performer to receive an Academy Award nomination in the acting category.

The posts were translated from Spanish, which is Gascón’s mother tongue. One of them talked of Floyd’s death in 2020 following a run-in with the law in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
“In all honesty, I don’t think many people gave a damn about drug addict and con artist George Floyd, but his passing has shown once more that some people still believe that Black people are… without rights and that police officers are murderers, she wrote. “Everyone is mistaken.”
Following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to Hollywood and much of the world, the actress also shared scathing posts regarding the 2021 Academy Awards.
“The Oscars are increasingly resembling an independent and protest film ceremony; I couldn’t tell if I was witnessing an 8M, a Black Lives Matter demonstration, or an Afro-Korean festival,” Gascón wrote. Other than that, it was a very awful gala.”
Additionally, she shared posts about Islam and the Muslim community.
“Islam is turning into a human infection that has to be treated immediately,” she stated in a 2016 piece.
Gascón’s portrayal of a drug lord pursuing gender reassignment surgery in the Netflix musical/crime thriller earned her a nomination for best actress.
