Gauteng is in mourning. A Hammanskraal teen suicide and a Soweto matriculant who died from respiratory difficulty. Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has expressed his sadness at the demise of both students in the province.

One of the two deceased was an 18-year-old student at the Sekanontoane Secondary School in Soweto. The student passed away on Tuesday after experiencing sudden breathing challenges.

She was taken to a nearby hospital from where she was transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital for further medical attention. She passed away at the hospital.

The other death was a Hammanskraal 17-year-old student of Dominican School for the Deaf. The student took his own life on Wednesday after a disagreement with his significant other.

His body was recovered by other students in the school’s junior hostel who untied him and sought help from paramedics.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona sympathised with pupils and families of both victims saying the psycho-social unit team has been dispersed to both schools to provide the necessary counselling and support for all who might have been affected by the sad incidents.
