Gauteng Premier, David Makhura Resigns (News Central TV)

David Makhura has stepped down Thursday, after 8 years run as premier of South Africa’s economic hub.

He’s also resigning as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, while the newly elected ANC Gauteng Chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi, will assume the Premier position.

The party asked Makhura to vacate the office after the party’s provincial conference in June.

He had previously indicated that he would not be pursuing any further leadership positions in the province.

He’s also been embroiled in a corruption scandal at Tembisa Hospital, but he’s dismissed the allegations relating to improper procurement as baseless.

Makhura was elected in 2014 after former premier Nomvula Mokonyane took up a ministerial post.
