Barcelona midfielder Gavi has torn his Anterior Cruciate Ligament and has suffered lateral meniscus damage to his knee. His club, Barcelona announced Gavi suffered a ‘complete tear’ of his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) as well as a meniscus injury while on international duty.
Further tests confirm that Gavi will be out for seven to nine months and likely to miss the whole season, including EURO 2024.
This has come as sad news for Barcelona and Spain as the 19-year-old central midfielder is considered a star player by both his La Liga club Barcelona and his national team Spain.
During Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying 3-1 win over Georgia, the Spanish professional player landed awkwardly while jumping to control the ball and was forced off in tears in Valladolid. He is now set for a lengthy layoff with surgery coming up later this week.
“Test carried out on Monday morning on the first team player Gavi have shown that he has a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an associated injury to the lateral meniscus,” read Barca’s official statement. “The player will have surgery in the coming days after which a new medical update will be released.”
Barcelona have added a message of support for him as he prepares for a long road back to full fitness with Euro 2024 already likely to be a race against time: “The Andalusian midfielder is a firm favorite amongst the fans,” read Barca’s message. “Gavi’s spirit and determination on the field are what defines him as a player, and he gives absolutely everything in a Barca shirt. For that reason, his injury is a big blow for all Barca fans.”
Born on August 5, 2004, Pablo Martín Páez Gavira won the Golden Boy award in 2022 and received the Kopa Trophy, awarded by France Football during the 2022 Ballon d’Or ceremony.
In 2015, at the age of 11, Gavi signed for Barcelona academy and later signed his first professional contract with the Catalan club in 2020 and was promoted directly from the under-16 team to the under-19 team. In 2021, he played his first official match for Barcelona’s first team in the 2–1 La Liga win over Getafe. In September of the same year, he received a surprise call-up to the senior Spain national team by the manager Luis Enrique.
