Gaza Conflict: US Envoy Criticises UN’s Focus on Israel

US Envoy Criticizes UN's Focus on Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has criticized the UN for its focus on Israel, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Since October 7, the violence has resulted in the deaths of over 41,100 Palestinians.

During a Council on Foreign Relations event, Thomas-Greenfield argued that Israel faces an “inordinate” amount of scrutiny at the UN. She pointed out that no other country has a consistent monthly agenda item at the UN Security Council, a practice she described as “problematic.”

When asked about the recognition of a Palestinian state, Thomas-Greenfield was evasive, suggesting that the Palestinians lack the necessary elements for statehood. She also addressed the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, stating unequivocally, “We will not arrest him.”

The ICC’s Prosecutor, Karim Khan, has sought warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant on charges of war crimes related to the Gaza conflict. However, Israel does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction, and the country continues to face international criticism for its military actions in Gaza.

The UN Security Council has called for an immediate ceasefire, but Israel’s ongoing bombardment has devastated Gaza, leading to severe humanitarian crises and widespread destruction.
